Handling session

Second day at work.

Today has also been a nice, but short day 9-1 :)

Had a handling session with the Ashmoleans conservators - learnt how to handle Paper, textile, ceramics, paintings and so on... They taught us the basic stuff like: don't rush and plan your route - so basically the same stuff as we learnt at New walk and by Katherine Edgar :)

I very much enjoy having my evenings of, to be free to do whatever you want! so I'm embracing my inner geek by reading about Digital media (which I love!)

Still have to write the abstract for my dissertation, I'm not looking forward to that! will do it tomorrow.

Oxford...hmmmm.... I absolutely love the city, had some time to walk around in the city centre today and it is so beautiful! old buildings, churches, colleges, universities! The are where we live is very very lovely, and the girls I live with are so nice, so everything is just fine!

Curators whore?

Today was the first day of work at the beautiful Ashmolean museum. I absolutely love that place. People seems really nice, and apparently we are allowed to work in areas that interests us, which is nice. Vicky gave us a brief introduction to the placement. And after that a person from the installation team taught us that installation teams are basically "Curators whores" as they move from curator to curator to instal their objects. Which is basically true, I have decided that I very much like the term!

The Museum is beautiful, I can't wait until we actually have to do some "real" museum work!

Just come back from the pub :) Miriam (course /room mate) took us to this lovely pub, that I would never have found on my own.

I very much enjoyed my first day in Oxford, and have completely fallen in love with the Ashmolean museum.

Hello Oxford

Today was moving day (I hate packing & moving) after a hard and long night out in Leicester, I had to get up really early to move out of my flat in Leicester. I missed my bus to Oxford and had to wait at the bus station in three hours, with hangovers :(

Now I'm in oxford in my lovely house in our lovely area. Oxford is such a beautiful City, I can't wait until I have some time to explore the city.

Tomorrow is the big day - first day of work placement at the Ashmolean! I'm really excited it's going to be good to try to work in a large museum.

Hello to the world

This is my first entry in a blog, soo what to write well I guess I have to introduce myself. So here it goes:
My name is Rikke, I'm from Denmark. I'm a digital media/museums/archeologist, yes I'm a geek, and I'm proud of it :)

I'm almost done with my masters degree in museum studies from the university of Leicester. Taking the risk of moving to Leicester to follow the course have properly been one of the best decisions in my life, the course have been amazing! Inspiring lectures, teachers and fellow students.

Tonight will be my last in lovely Leicester. It's going to be really sad to leave this place, mostly the university, the department and all the wonderful museums studies peps. I'm moving to Oxford to go to a placement at the Ashmolean museum (http://www.ashmolean.org/), its going to be very exciting to work at a large museum in a foreign country.
This blog will mainly function as a work placement diary (maybe it will change)
